Fellowship is a pillar programme of the Complexity Institute (CI). Research fellows work at the institute for a period of 3 months on an interdisciplinary question with complex systems methodology as their common language. Interested candidates can apply for a fellowship within the framework of Research Focus Areas programmes, or propose your own interdisciplinary research challenges.

 

Duration

This is a 3-month fellowship. The arrangement can be tailored to successful candidate’s circumstance if needed. Generally we expect the following:

·      Overseas Candidate                                                                                                                                        Able to stay a minimum of 1 month continuously at the institute each time and completes the fellowship within 6 months. They are encouraged to stay for the full  three (3) months in a row.

·      Singapore-based Candidate has two options:

       i.     Part-time Fellowship

         Minimum 2 days a week at the institute. Candidates are to make their own arrangement with their own faculty/department on this.

 

      ii.     Full-time Fellowship

                Minimum 4 days a week at the institute.

 

Eligibility Criteria

·      PhD degree from a reputable university and postdoc working experience.

·      Proven research track record & interest in complexity science.

·      Preference for interdisciplinary research.

·      Good publication records.

·      Research proposal that demonstrates feasibility, novelty, impacts and potential benefits.

 

What CI Offers

We offer a customised support package for each fellow on a case-by-case basis. Researchers with or without any other funding are welcome to apply. A successful candidate can expect all or some of the following supports:

·           Work space at CI and its facilities & administrative support

·           Access to NTU libraries, research facilities &  NTU researchers

·           Access to CI’s worldwide scientific network

·           Expertise of a resident data scientist and in-house complexity scientists

·           Local transport allowance to official meetings & events

·           A faculty member as mentor or a researcher assigned as buddy

·           Seed funding for pilot project or development work – subject to application

·           Funding for conference travel for presenting paper arising from fellowship – subject to application

In addition,

Overseas Candidate gets:

·           Return economy class airfare from residing country; and

·           All-in living monthly allowance capped at S$4,000/month (covering accommodation) for a max of 3 months.

 

Singapore-based fellow:

May look forward to another fellowship at Institute of Advance Study in Amsterdam, Complexity Science Hub Vienna or ITMO University, St. Petersburg with the support of:

·           Return economy class airfare

·         All-in living monthly allowance capped at S$5,000/month equivalent (covering accommodation) for a max of 3 months.

       This offer is valid within 1.5 year after the fellowship ends, contingent on a successful fellowship  and at the ​sole discretion of CI.

Conditions

Research fellows are expected to:

·           receive financial package tailored to their needs at sole discretion of CI

·           participate in CI activities and engage with its researchers & students

·           work together with (at least) one CI researcher on a joint article or other academic output

·           give  at least a public lecture and/or organise (at least) one activity

·           submit an A4-page report on activities and achievements within 2 months after the fellowship ends

·           acknowledge CI in all publications resulting from the fellowship
